ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Independent agencies of the United States government

Imagine if the United States government was like a big toy store with lots of different areas. In this toy store, there are some special toys that aren't owned by any one part of the store. Instead, they are owned by a group of people who work together to make sure they work the way they should. These toys are called "independent agencies."

These independent agencies are kind of like superheroes! They don't have to listen to any one person in the government, but they still have to follow rules and laws. They do really important jobs like protecting the environment, regulating companies, and making sure people are safe. They have special powers that help them do their jobs well, like the power to investigate and enforce rules.

Sometimes, the government will create an independent agency because they need someone to handle a specific task. For example, the Consumer Product Safety Commission was created to make sure the toys you play with are safe. Sometimes, the independent agencies work together to help keep us all safe, like when the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) works with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make sure our food and water are safe.

Even though independent agencies are not controlled by one part of the government, they are still held accountable for their actions. This means they have to answer to the people of the United States and follow the rules set by the lawmakers in Congress.

So, just like you might have a special toy that you share with your friends and take care of together, independent agencies are special groups of people that take care of really important jobs for all of us.
