Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention, 1989

Okay kiddo, so there are some people in the world who have been living in certain places for a very long time, sometimes even before the countries we know today were created. These people have their own traditions, cultures, and ways of life that are different from what we might be used to.

Back in 1989, lots of countries got together and made a special agreement called the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention. This agreement is like a set of rules that everyone who signed it has to follow when it comes to how they treat these people who have been living in certain parts of the world for generations.

The rules say that these indigenous people have the right to keep their own languages, cultures, and traditions. They also have the right to own the land that they have been living on for a very long time, and the rules say that nobody can take their land away from them without their permission.

The agreement also says that these people have the right to be treated fairly and with respect. This means that they shouldn't be forced to leave their homes, they should have access to good healthcare and education, and they should be able to decide what happens in their communities.

Overall, the Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention is an agreement that helps make sure that these people are treated well and are able to continue living their lives the way they want to, while still being part of the bigger countries they live in.
