ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Industrial microbiology

Industrial microbiology is a branch of biology that studies how scientists and engineers use tiny living things called microorganisms to make useful products. Microorganisms are very small and are most often invisible to the human eye. They can be seen through microscopes, and can range from bacteria and fungi to viruses. All of these microorganisms can be used to create many products that we use every day, such as food, medicine, biofuels, and even textiles. Scientists and engineers work with these microorganisms to figure out how to make products more efficiently, using less resources and fewer toxic materials. Industrial microbiology also focuses on how to improve the quality of products and services, as well as making new, improved products.
