ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Inerting (gas)

Imagine you have a toy car in a box. Now, if you want to keep the car safe, you need to protect it from things that could harm it like dust or water. One way to do that is by putting some pillows inside the box - this will prevent the car from moving around and getting scratched or damaged.

Inerting (gas) is similar - it's a way to protect things that could burn or explode. It involves filling a container, like a fuel tank, with a gas that won't react with the contents inside. This makes sure that the contents won't catch fire or explode, even if they're exposed to heat or oxygen.

Think of it like this: imagine you're a little kid with a toy rocket ship. Now, pretending that the rocket ship has fuel in it, it could be dangerous if there's too much oxygen or any other fire-causing things inside, because it could explode. But if you fill the rocket ship with gas that won't react with the fuel, everything stays safe!

So inerting is like using a bunch of safe gas or "pillows" to keep special things safe when they could be in danger.
