Infrared non-destructive testing of materials

When we want to check to see if something is working the way it's supposed to or if it's broken, we can use special machines called testing equipment. Infrared non-destructive testing is a way of looking at something without hurting it or breaking it.

Imagine you have a toy car that you want to check if it's working properly. Normally, you might take it apart to see if all the pieces are there and if they move the way they should. But if you take it apart, you might accidentally break it, and that would be bad.

Instead, we can use a special machine that shines a light on the toy car. This light is called infrared light. This light is like magic because it can see things you can't see with your eyes. It can tell you if something is too hot or too cold and it can see things inside the toy car that are hidden.

The special machine we use to shine the infrared light is called an infrared camera. The camera takes a picture of the toy car with the infrared light on it. The picture shows us different colors, and each color tells us something different. For example, if one part of the toy car is warmer than the rest of it, that part will be a different color in the picture. This helps us know if that part is working the way it's supposed to or not.

Infrared non-destructive testing is useful for things like checking the engines of airplanes, looking for leaks in pipes, and even checking for cracks in important parts of a building. It helps us see things we normally can't see, so we can fix problems before they become big problems. And because it doesn't hurt or break anything, we can use it over and over again to keep things working the way they should.
