Internalized oppression is when someone is made to feel inferior or less valuable than others because of their belonging to a group that has been historically discriminated against or oppressed. For example, if someone is constantly told that their race is not as smart as others or their gender is weak, they may start to believe these negative messages about themselves. They may begin to think that they are not as good as others and may even start to treat themselves badly because of it. This is called internalized oppression. It's like putting yourself down because of something that you have no control over, like the color of your skin or your gender. But we are all unique and valuable just the way we are, no matter what others may say or believe.
