Imagine you have a toy boat that you like to play with in the bath. Sometimes when you leave the boat in the water for too long, it gets covered with yucky stuff like algae and barnacles. This makes the boat dirty and slows it down when you try to play with it.
Ships are like big versions of your toy boat, and they travel in big oceans and seas. To prevent them from getting covered in yucky stuff, people put special paint on the bottom of the ship that prevents organisms from sticking to it. This is called anti-fouling paint.
However, some types of anti-fouling paint contain harmful chemicals that can hurt the environment and marine life. These chemicals can also spread to other parts of the ocean and harm other living things.
To prevent this from happening, many countries got together and made an agreement called the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships. This agreement says that ships cannot use harmful anti-fouling paint and must use safer alternatives instead.
By doing this, we can help protect our oceans and keep the environment healthy for all the animals living in it.
