ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Internetworking

Imagine you have two toy villages, one with red houses and the other with blue houses. These villages are far away from each other and there is no road or path connecting them, making it difficult for people to move between the two villages.

Now imagine if you had a big board, where you could put pieces of paper with the names of all the people who live in the red house village and their addresses. You could also do the same for the blue house village. This board is like the internet.

Using the internet, you can connect the red village and the blue village so that people can communicate with each other. You can send postcards, letters, and even make phone calls between the two villages. This is what we call Internetworking.

In the real world, instead of a board, we use routers and switches to connect different networks (like the two toy villages) to the internet. These devices help us route traffic and data between the networks, so that people and machines can communicate with each other no matter where they are in the world.
