ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Iraq Inquiry

OK, kiddo, let me tell you about something called the Iraq Inquiry. You remember the silly storybook we read about the three little pigs and the big bad wolf, right? Well, this is kind of like that, but instead of pigs and a wolf, it's about people in a faraway land called Iraq and some other people who decided to go there.

See, a while ago, a bunch of grown-ups who were in charge of a country called the United Kingdom (that's where we live!) decided they wanted to help some other people in Iraq who were having trouble with their own grown-ups who were in charge. They thought it would be a good idea to send some of our grown-ups over there to try to make things better.

But as it turned out, things didn't really get better. In fact, a lot of bad things happened, and people started to wonder if it was really a good idea to go over to Iraq in the first place. So some other grown-ups decided to look into what happened and why.

That's where the Iraq Inquiry comes in. It's a very long and boring thing where some very smart people look at all the things that happened in Iraq and try to figure out if everyone did the right thing or not. They ask lots of questions and look at lots of papers and reports to try to get to the bottom of everything.

Some people think the people who went to Iraq should have done things differently, and some people think they did the best they could. So the Iraq Inquiry is trying to figure out who's right and who's wrong.

It might be hard to understand all of this when you're only five, but basically, the Iraq Inquiry is like when you're playing with your friends and something goes wrong, and you want to figure out how to make it better. Only instead of playing, it's real life, and instead of your friends, it's grown-ups. Does that make sense?
