ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Irish flute

Okay, so you know those long, skinny tubes that people blow into to make noise? That's what a flute is! But an Irish flute is a special kind of flute that is really popular in Ireland. Instead of being made out of metal like some flutes you've seen, Irish flutes are usually made out of wood.

When someone plays an Irish flute, they have to blow air into a little hole at the top, and then cover some of the other holes with their fingers to make different notes. It's kind of like a game of musical "whack-a-mole" – you try to keep one hole closed while opening another one to create a different sound.

People in Ireland have been playing Irish flutes for hundreds of years – even before some of our grandparents were born! The sound of an Irish flute is really special because it has a very sweet, soft tone, which is perfect for playing traditional Irish music.

So if you ever hear someone playing an Irish flute, remember that they're making music by blowing into a wooden tube and covering holes with their fingers like they're playing musical whack-a-mole!
