An Irish round tower is an old tall stone tower that was built in Ireland in the Middle Ages. The round towers were usually built from stones that were fit together without any mortar (cement) to keep them together. The towers were usually about 30 meters tall, and had very thick walls. There were usually windows near the top of the tower where people could look out and see danger or spot an approaching enemy. The door of the tower was usually very high up to make it harder for an enemy to get in. Inside the tower, people would store treasured items and important documents. Sometimes people used the tower as a place to hide and be safe.
