Islam in the Soviet Union

Islam is a religion that began in the Middle East thousands of years ago. People who follow Islam believe in one God, called Allah, and follow the teachings of the prophet Muhammad. During the Soviet Union, Islam was a religion practiced by some people living in the Soviet Union, but the government did not allow it to be openly practiced. People who wanted to practice Islam had to keep it a secret, or risk getting in trouble with the government.
