Islamic toilet etiquette

Islamic toilet etiquette, also known as Istinja, refers to the way that Muslims must clean themselves after using the toilet. The process of Istinja is important because it is believed that cleanliness is an essential part of Islamic faith.

Before entering the toilet, Muslims must say a prayer known as ‘Bismillah’ which means “In the name of Allah”. After entering the toilet, they must not face the direction of Mecca and must take off their shoes as they are considered unclean.

During the act of using the toilet, Muslims must not speak or look around and must remain respectful. They are also not allowed to urinate or defecate in water, on the ground, or in any place that is considered impure.

After using the toilet, Muslims must perform Istinja, which means cleaning the private parts with water. This can be done using a small jug of water, a bottle or a bidet. It is also preferred to use the left hand to clean, instead of toilet paper or tissue, which is considered to be less hygienic.

After performing Istinja, Muslims must wash their hands three times and say a prayer known as ‘Madinah’ which means “O Allah, make me clean”. Muslims should then exit the toilet with their right foot and say a prayer known as ‘Ghufranak’ which means “O Allah, forgive me”.

It is also important for Muslims to keep the toilet area clean and tidy, and to avoid entering the toilet without a valid reason or intention. This is because the bathroom is considered a sacred and private space that should be respected and kept clean.

Overall, Islamic toilet etiquette is a way for Muslims to maintain cleanliness and purity, and to show respect for themselves, others, and their faith.
