Isleño (Louisiana)

So, kiddo, you know how there are many different kinds of people in the world, right? Well, some people who used to live in Louisiana a long time ago were called Isleños. They came from a place called the Canary Islands, which is really far away in the Atlantic Ocean near Africa.

The Isleños came to Louisiana many years ago, in the late 1700s and early 1800s. They settled in a place called St. Bernard Parish, which is near New Orleans. They had their own language, which was a mix of Spanish and a language from the Canary Islands called Guanche.

The Isleños were really good at fishing and farming, and they made their homes out of wood and raised them up on stilts because they were worried about floods. They also had their own traditions and celebrations, like the San Isidro Fiesta, where they would dance and have a big party to honor a saint.

Today, there are still some Isleños living in St. Bernard Parish and they are proud of their heritage. They have a museum and cultural center where people can learn about their history and traditions. The Isleños are an important part of Louisiana's history and culture, even though they came from far away.
