ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Issus (planthopper)

Okay kiddo, so have you ever seen bugs that jump around like kangaroos? Well, there’s one kind of bug called an issus that looks a bit like a grasshopper, but it’s actually a planthopper. These tiny creatures are only a few millimeters long, but they are really good at jumping.

Like most bugs, issus have different body parts such as a head, thorax and abdomen. Their body is covered in armor-like plates, which help protect them from predators like birds and other insects. They also have six legs and two antennas, which they use to sense their surroundings.

Now, let’s talk about how they jump. You know how some toys have springs in them that make them bounce up and down? Issus have something similar called “catapults” inside their legs. When they’re ready to jump, the catapult compresses and then releases, propelling the bug into the air. They can jump up to 100 times their body length, which is pretty impressive for a tiny bug!

Issus mostly feed on plant sap, but some species have evolved to feed on animal blood or even other insects. They can be found all over the world, but are most commonly found in temperate regions like Europe and North America.

Overall, issus are fascinating little creatures that use their unique body features to survive in their environment.
