Well, a long time ago, in 1979, there was a big machine called a drill that was trying to get oil from a big ocean called the Gulf of Mexico. But something went wrong and the drill broke, causing a big hole in the ocean floor.
Because of this hole, a lot of oil started squirting out of the ground and went into the ocean. It was kind of like a big fountain of black oil in the middle of the ocean.
The oil kept coming out for almost a year! It was a really big problem because the oil covered the water and made it hard for animals like fish, birds, and sea turtles to live. They couldn't breathe, eat or swim like they needed to.
People tried to clean up the oil, but it was really hard because there was so much of it and it was spread out over a huge area. It was a sad time for the animals and people who lived near the Gulf of Mexico.
