ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Jamaican honours system

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes adults give out medals or awards to people who have done something really special or important? Well, in Jamaica they have their own medals that they give out to people who have done great things for their country or helped others in a big way.

There are different types of medals, just like how you have different colors of ribbons for first, second, and third place in a race. The highest honor someone can receive is called the Order of National Hero. Only seven people have ever received this medal, and it's because they did things that completely changed Jamaica in a good way.

There are also other medals that people can receive, like the Order of Jamaica or the Order of Distinction. These medals are given to people who have done things like helped the environment, helped other people, been really good at their jobs, or made a big difference in their community.

When someone gets one of these medals, it's a really big deal! They get to wear a special medal around their neck, and their name is written in a special book to remember them forever.

So you see, the Jamaican honors system is a way for the people of Jamaica to say "thank you" and "good job" to the people who have made their country a better place.
