James Brendan Connolly
Okay kiddo, so James Brendan Connolly was a really special man. He was born a long long time ago, in 1868. He was born in Ireland, but then he came to America with his family when he was just a little boy.
When he grew up, he did something amazing. He became the first person ever to win an Olympic medal for the United States. Do you know what the Olympics are? They’re a really big event where people from all around the world come to play sports together and compete against each other.
James was really good at a lot of different sports. He was really strong and he could jump really high! But he won his medal for something called the triple jump. It’s a type of jumping event where you have to jump really far three times. And James was the best in the whole world at it!
James loved sports so much that he even wrote a book about it. It was called “The Olympic Games: Athens 1896” and it was all about the first modern Olympic games. Those games were really special because they were the first time since the ancient Greeks that people came together to play sports like that.
