ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

James Murray (lexicographer)

Okay, so James Murray was a person who really liked words. He was so good at understanding and explaining words that people called him a lexicographer. That's just a fancy word for someone who is really, really good at understanding words.

James Murray was born a long time ago, in 1837 in Scotland. When he was a little boy, he loved learning new words and reading books. When he grew up, he moved to England and became a teacher. But he still really loved learning new words and understanding how they worked.

One day, James Murray heard about a project that was trying to make a really big book that would have every single word in the English language. This sounded like a really cool project to him, so he decided to help out.

Every day, James Murray would read letters that people sent him with new words. He would also read books and newspapers to find new words. Then he would write down all the words and try to figure out what they meant and how they were used.

This was a really big job, because there are so many words in the English language! But James Murray was really good at it. He spent over 30 years working on this big book, and he found over 400,000 words!

Finally, in 1928, the big book was finished. It was called the Oxford English Dictionary, and it had every single word in the English language. James Murray was so happy that he had helped make this book.

So, James Murray was a person who loved learning new words and explaining what they meant. He helped make a really big book that has every single word in the English language, and he is remembered as a really important person in the history of the English language.
