Japanese militarism refers to Japan's aggressive military policies during the period leading up to and during World War II. Militarism is when a nation relies heavily on its military and increases the military's power and influence in its society. In Japan, powerful military leaders wanted to make Japan stronger by building up its navy and army, and by adding new weapons and conquering other countries. The military wanted to expand Japan's power and influence throughout Asia and the Pacific, and they wanted to do this without having to obey the rules of other countries. To do this, they took control of the government and made all the decisions, even decisions that were not good for the people of Japan. This led to Japan attacking other countries and starting World War II.
