ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Jewish adjacent

Jewish adjacent is a term used to describe people or things that are not technically Jewish, but are closely related or connected to Jewish culture, customs and traditions.

Imagine you have a group of friends who all like to play basketball together. Even if you don't like basketball, you might still hang out with them and learn about the game, so in a way you are "basketball adjacent." Likewise, if you have friends who are Jewish and you learn about their religion and customs, you might be considered "Jewish adjacent."

Some examples of things that are Jewish adjacent could be foods like bagels or challah bread, or customs like lighting Shabbat candles or saying prayers in Hebrew. Even if you are not Jewish yourself, you might still participate in these things or appreciate them because of your connection to Jewish people or culture.

Being Jewish adjacent is not the same as being Jewish, but it can still be a meaningful way to learn and appreciate different cultures and traditions.
