Okay, kiddo, so you know how in school, the teacher always tells you that everyone is equal and should be treated fairly? Well, sometimes that doesn't happen in the real world and certain groups of people, like Black people, can be treated unfairly just because of the color of their skin.
A long time ago, there were laws that made it hard for Black people to vote. It wasn't fair because everyone should have the right to vote if they are a citizen and old enough. But some people didn't want Black people to vote because they thought they weren't as good as white people.
Then a man named John Lewis came along and he fought really hard for Black people to be able to vote. He even got hurt a lot of times because some people didn't want him to succeed. But he never gave up and eventually, the government listened to him and made a new law called the Voting Rights Act.
This law made it easier for Black people to vote and made sure that they weren't treated unfairly when trying to register to vote. It was a big win for civil rights and made sure that everyone was treated equally when it came to voting. John Lewis was a hero and his work helped make America a fairer and more equal place for everyone.
