ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

John Rabe

John Rabe was a man who lived a long time ago. He was born in Germany in 1882 and worked as a businessman in China. Back then, China was divided up into different areas controlled by different countries. One part was controlled by Japan, another part by China, and so on.

During World War II, Japan was trying to conquer China, which led to a lot of fighting and terrible things happening. John Rabe was the head of the local Nazi party in China, but instead of helping Japan take over, he decided to do something good. He set up a safety zone in the city of Nanjing where people could come and be safe from the fighting.

John Rabe worked hard to make sure that the people in the safety zone had food, shelter, and medical care. He even flew the Nazi flag over the zone to keep the Japanese soldiers from attacking it. He wrote letters to people in other countries telling them about what was happening and asking for help.

Because of John Rabe's efforts, thousands of people were saved from being killed or hurt during the war. After the war, he went back to Germany and was put on trial for being a Nazi, but he was able to prove that he had been trying to do something good in China.

In the end, John Rabe is remembered as a hero who risked his life to help others during a very difficult time in history.
