Joseph McCarthy

Some people in the United States were really afraid that the communists would take over the country and make everything bad.

Joseph McCarthy thought that there were a lot of communists hiding in the United States and that they had secret plans to take over the government. He started accusing people of being communists and saying that they were trying to take over the country.

A lot of people started believing him and started to get scared. Some people were even fired from their jobs or put in jail just because they might have been seen as communist. It was a really bad time and people were very afraid.

Eventually, people started to realize that Joseph McCarthy was making a lot of this up and he wasn't really finding any communists. People started to speak out against him and he lost a lot of power. He eventually died and people realized that he had caused a lot of unnecessary fear and destruction with his accusations.
