Joseph Morewood Staniforth was a man who lived a long time ago. He was born in England in 1840, which was a really long time before you were born. He did lots of things in his life, but there are a few things that make him special.
Joseph was really good at drawing pictures of animals. He drew pictures of all kinds of animals, like bears and birds and monkeys. He loved animals so much that he decided to make a book full of his drawings. The book was called "The Natural History Picture Book". Many kids loved this book because it had lots of pretty pictures and also taught them about different animals.
Joseph was also really smart. He came up with an idea that helped ships stay on course when they sailed across the ocean. He invented a kind of compass that had a special holder that made it easier to read. This was really helpful for sailors because it helped them know which direction they were going.
Even though Joseph did lots of great things in his life, not many people know about him today. But that's okay because we can still remember him and all the good things he did.
