Josephine Bakhita was a woman who lived a long time ago in the country of Sudan. She was born in a village and lived with her family until she was about 7 years old. One day while she was playing with her friends, some bad people came and captured her. They took her away from her family and sold her into slavery.
Being a slave means that you have to work for someone else without getting paid. Bakhita was sold to many different people throughout her life as a slave. She was treated very badly and had to do a lot of hard work. She was even beaten sometimes when she didn't do things exactly the way her owners wanted her to.
One day, Bakhita was sold to a kind family who treated her well. They were Christians and taught Bakhita about God. She was amazed by their love and began to have faith in God herself. When that family had to leave Sudan, Bakhita begged them to take her with them. They agreed and they traveled to Italy together.
In Italy, Bakhita became a Catholic Christian and joined a religious community known as the Canossians. She spent the rest of her life serving God and helping others. She was loved by people in many places and known for her kind heart and faith in God.
Many years after Bakhita had passed away, the Catholic Church recognized her as a saint. This means that they think she was a very special person who followed God and did good things. Today, people still look up to Josephine Bakhita as a role model for being kind and faithful to God.
