ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Judge Advocate General

Okay kiddo, have you ever watched a movie or a TV show where there's a military court and someone is defending or prosecuting a person in uniform? That person is usually a lawyer in the military, and they are called a Judge Advocate General, or JAG for short.

Just like how you have doctors, teachers, and firefighters to help people in our community, the military also needs people to help them with legal stuff. That's where the JAG comes in.

The JAG is a specially trained lawyer who works for the military. They help soldiers who get in trouble with the law, like if they did something wrong or broke a rule. The JAG also helps the military follow the rules themselves, like making sure they don't violate people's rights or break the laws of the country.

Being a JAG is a big responsibility, because the military relies on them to make sure everyone is following the rules and being fair to one another. They have to know a lot about the law and how the military works. They are kind of like superheroes, but instead of fighting bad guys, they fight legal problems!

So, in short, the JAG is the military's lawyer who helps them follow the rules and make sure everyone is treated fairly. They are super smart and help keep the military running smoothly.
