Jupiter Column

Okay kiddo, so you know how our planet is called Earth and we live on it, right? Well, there are other big planets in our Solar System like Jupiter. Jupiter is the biggest one and it has a really big storm on it called the Great Red Spot.

Now, imagine you had a really big straw and you stuck it into Jupiter's atmosphere, the gassy stuff on top of the planet, and started to suck like you do with a milkshake. When you do that, the gas from Jupiter's atmosphere would come up through the straw and make a tall, thin tube that goes up and up into the sky. That's what a Jupiter column is.

It's like if you blew up a balloon and twisted it around to make a long, tall shape. Only, instead of a balloon, it's a really big straw and instead of twisting it by hand, it's twisted by the winds in Jupiter's atmosphere.

Scientists study Jupiter columns because they tell us a lot about the planet's atmosphere and weather. They also study them to learn more about how planets are formed and what they are made of.
