ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kanawha County textbook controversy

Imagine you are going to school and the teacher gives you a book to read. But your parents don't like what's in the book because it doesn't match their beliefs. They go to the school and tell them to take the book away and not let anyone read it.

That's kind of what happened in Kanawha County, West Virginia in the 1970s. Some parents didn't like the books that their children were being taught from because they thought they were promoting things like sex, drugs, and communism. They wanted the books taken away and replaced with ones that they approved of.

So, a big argument started between the parents and the school board. The parents formed groups and protested at the schools. They stopped their children from going to class and even burned the books they didn't like outside the schools. The school board tried to compromise and remove some of the controversial parts from the books, but the parents weren't happy with that either.

Eventually, the situation got so bad that the National Guard had to be called in to keep the peace. The controversy lasted for several years and caused a lot of tension in the community.

In the end, the books were still taught in the schools, but some changes were made to satisfy the parents. However, it was a big lesson for everyone involved about the importance of free speech, respecting different opinions, and finding a way to work together.
