Karayuki-san

Karayuki-san were Japanese women who were sent to other countries to work in places like hotels, restaurants and bars. They were sent abroad to work during the late 19th century and early 20th century, when Japan was poor and people needed work to make money. Many Karayuki-san were sent to Southeast Asia and other countries in the Pacific. These women often faced difficult and dangerous working conditions, but they persevered to send money back to their families in Japan. Karayuki-san are an important part of Japanese history, as they were among the first large groups of Japanese people to travel outside the country.
