Karhunen–Loève theorem

Imagine you have a big box filled with lots and lots of toys. Some of those toys might look very similar to each other, while others might look completely different.

Now, let's assume that you want to organize those toys in a certain way so that you can easily find the toys that look alike. What would you do?

One way to do that is to group toys that have similar features together. For example, you might put all the cars in one group, all the dolls in another group, and so on.

But what if there are some toys that have some features that are not shared by any other toy? Where would you put those toys?

This might seem like a tough problem, but mathematicians have come up with a solution to a similar problem. Instead of toys, they deal with mathematical functions, such as images or signals.

One such solution is called the Karhunen-Loève Theorem. In simple terms, this theorem helps us find a way to represent complex functions using a few simple functions.
