Keetch-Byram Drought Index

Hi there! Do you know what a drought is? It's when there's not enough water for the plants and animals to drink. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index is a way for people to measure how dry the soil is, and whether there's a risk of a fire breaking out because of how dry it is.

Think of the soil like a sponge – when it rains, the sponge soaks up the water, and when it doesn't rain for a while, the sponge dries out. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index measures how dry the sponge (soil) is by looking at how deep you would have to dig to find moist soil.

If the number is high, it means that the soil is very dry and there's a higher risk of a fire breaking out. If the number is low, it means the soil is more moist and there's a lower risk of a fire.

Scientists use the Keetch-Byram Drought Index to help them predict when there might be a fire and to figure out ways to prevent it from happening. It's really important for people to keep track of the soil's moisture level, especially in areas that are really dry or hot, because that's where fires are most likely to happen.

So that's what the Keetch-Byram Drought Index is – a way for people to measure how dry the soil is and whether there's a risk of a fire starting!
