Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge
Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge is a special area where animals like birds, fish, and other creatures live safely and are protected.
A long time ago, people used to farm and grow crops in the area where Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge is now located. But some of the water used on those farms contained a chemical called selenium, which is bad for animals when there is too much of it.
Unfortunately, when the water with selenium was released into the ground, it started to build up and poison the animals living in the water. People noticed that the animals were getting sick and dying, and they became concerned.
To fix this problem, the government created the Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge to help protect the animals and their homes. This special area has lots of safe spaces for animals to live and grow, and it is monitored very closely by specially trained people called rangers.
Thanks to the Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge, the animals can now live happily and healthily in their natural habitat without having to worry about the harmful effects of selenium.
