ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kids of the Black Hole

Okay kiddo, imagine our universe is a big giant space with stars, planets and galaxies. Now, black holes are like big vacuum cleaners in space that suck up everything, even light!

When a star dies, it can also turn into a black hole. And sometimes, black holes can even merge with each other to become bigger.

But the thing is, black holes don't just swallow everything up and disappear. They create something called an accretion disk, which is like a swirling circle of gas and dust that spins around the black hole.

In this disk, things get really hot and start to emit a lot of energy, which we can see as light and radiation. This energy can be so strong that it can even launch jets of matter and radiation into space at super high speeds!

Scientists call these kinds of black holes "active galactic nuclei" and they think that kids (or offspring) can form around them. These "kids" are actually clusters of stars that are born from the accretion disk and grow up around the black hole.

So, in a way, these kids of the black hole are like cosmic orphans that are born from the leftover gas and dust around the black hole. But they grow up to be big and strong star clusters, sometimes with hundreds or thousands of stars.

So there you have it, kiddo! Even black holes can have their own kind of space family.
