ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Kievan Rus

Kievan Rus was like a big family of people who lived in parts of what is now Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine a really really long time ago, around 1,000 years ago. They had their own way of living and their own leaders called princes. Their main city was called Kiev and the people who lived there were called Kievan Rus.

The people of Kievan Rus were really good at trading with other countries and they had a lot of valuable things that they sold, like honey, furs, and timber. They also had something called a "Varangian route" which was like a big road that went from the Baltic Sea all the way to the Black Sea, which helped them trade easily with other countries.

Even though they were a big family, sometimes different parts of Kievan Rus didn't get along very well and they would fight with each other. But sometimes they would work together and be really strong, like when they fought off an invasion from the Mongols.

Eventually, Kievan Rus started to fall apart and split into smaller parts, like Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. But their legacy still lives on today and they are an important part of the history of Eastern Europe.
