Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of Passover? It's a special holiday where Jewish people remember when they were slaves in Egypt many, many years ago. During Passover, Jewish people don't eat any bread that's made with wheat or other grains that can rise, called leavened bread.
Now, here's where kitniyot comes in. Some Jewish people who celebrate Passover don't eat any foods that come from certain plants, like beans, lentils, corn, and rice. These foods are called "kitniyot" in Hebrew. But why won't they eat these foods?
Well, a long time ago, there was a rule that said Jewish people couldn't eat these foods during Passover. The reason for this rule is a little bit complicated, but basically, some people were worried that these foods might be mixed up with wheat or other grains that are forbidden during Passover. So, to be on the safe side, they decided to avoid kitniyot altogether.
Even though some Jewish people still follow this rule today, other Jewish people think it's okay to eat kitniyot during Passover. It really depends on where you come from and what tradition you follow. But the most important thing about Passover is remembering our history and being with our family and friends, no matter what we eat.
