Klinger v. Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd.

Okay kiddo, so there's a person named Klinger who wrote a book called "In the Company of Sherlock Holmes," which is all about the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. But there's another group called the Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd. who own the rights to Sherlock Holmes, including some of the characters and stories. They said that Klinger's book couldn't be published because it had to follow their rules for what they thought Sherlock Holmes should be like. Klinger didn't agree and thought he should be able to write his own version of the story without the Estate telling him what to do. They went to court and argued about it, and in the end, the court said that Klinger was allowed to publish his book because some of the characters and stories from Sherlock Holmes were now part of the public domain and not owned by the Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd. So Klinger won and was able to share his version of Sherlock Holmes with the world.
