Koori

Koori is a word that Australian Aboriginal people use to describe themselves and their community. They are the people who lived in Australia for thousands of years before Europeans arrived. Koori people have a unique culture, language, and way of life that is different from other cultures around the world.

Imagine you live in a big family with lots of brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, and uncles. It's like that for Koori people too! They have a big family called a community with many different groups, all with their own language and customs.

Koori people have a deep connection to the land, animals, and the environment. They believe that they are part of the natural world and everything is connected. Koori people tell stories about their ancestors and their history through their art, music, and dance. They have rich ceremonies and traditions to celebrate special events like births, deaths, and marriages.

However, when Europeans first arrived in Australia, they did not understand the Koori culture and did not treat them with respect. This caused many problems for the Koori community, including the loss of their land, their culture, and their way of life. Today, Koori people are still fighting for recognition and respect for their culture, and many are working to preserve their traditions and pass them on to future generations.
