ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

LGBT adoption

Hey there kiddo! So, you might have heard about how some grown-ups who love each other might want to have a family, right? But sometimes it's tricky because they might not be able to have their own babies. So, what they can do is adopt a child who doesn't have a family yet.

Now, sometimes these grown-ups who want to adopt are not a mom and a dad like you might be used to seeing. They might be two moms or two dads or just one mom or one dad. That's what we call the LGBT community and it just means that they love someone who is the same gender as them or they don't really feel like they fit into the boy or girl box like most people do.

Now, some people used to think that only a mom and a dad could be the best parents, but we know that's not true. A family is made up of people who love and take care of each other, no matter what they look like or who they love. So, LGBT adoption just means that some families are made up of two moms or two dads or just one parent, and they can love and take care of a child just like any other family can.

Does that make sense to you, kiddo?
