ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Laboratory safety

When you go to the science lab, you have to play by some special rules to make sure you don't get hurt and you don't break any of the important stuff in the lab. We call this laboratory safety.

For starters, you always have to wear protective clothing like a lab coat or goggles. These items will cover your skin and your eyes from any dangerous chemicals or materials that could cause harm.

When you are working with chemicals, you can't just grab anything you want or pour them all over the place like you're playing with water. You have to be really careful about how you use them. If you aren't sure what you're supposed to do, then you should always ask your teacher or the person in charge. It's really important to follow the directions exactly or you could cause a laboratory accident.

Also, it's really important to keep everything organized and clean. You don't want to mix up chemicals or go touching strange things that you're not supposed to touch. You should always make sure you have a clean workspace and that you put everything back where you found it when you're done.

In addition, you should never play around in the lab, run, or act silly. This isn't a playground, it's a place for important science experiments that could have serious consequences if something goes wrong.

Ultimately, the most important rule is to always be aware of your surroundings and to be responsible. If you are careful, pay attention, and follow the rules, then you will have a great time in the laboratory and stay safe in the process!
