Labour Battalions (Ottoman Empire)

Okay, so a long, long time ago (about 500 years ago), there was a big empire called the Ottoman Empire. And in this empire, there were some people called the Sultan and his soldiers, who were in charge.

Now, the Sultan wanted to make his empire bigger and stronger, so he needed lots of workers to build things like roads, bridges, and buildings. But he didn't want to pay them very much money, so he came up with an idea called the labour battalion.

A labour battalion was a group of workers who were forced to work for the Sultan without getting paid much at all. These workers were usually poor people and prisoners of war, and they didn't have a choice about whether or not they wanted to work for the Sultan.

The work in these labour battalions was really hard and tiring, and the workers had to do things like carrying heavy stones, digging trenches, and building long walls. They didn't get to go home very often, and they had to live in really cramped and uncomfortable places called barracks.

Even though the workers didn't get paid very much or treated very well, the Sultan thought it was a good idea because he could get lots of work done without spending too much money. But for the workers, it was a really tough life.
