ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Labour Day

Labour Day, sometimes spelled Labor Day, is a holiday that happens every year, usually on the first Monday of September. It's a special day to celebrate and recognize the important work that people do to create things, build things, provide services, and help each other.

Think of it this way - imagine your mom or dad work at a supermarket, a hospital or a construction site. They work hard every day to make sure that the store is well-stocked, people that are sick receive the care they need, or a building is built safely and efficiently. On Labour Day, we take a moment to say "thank you" to them and all the other people who work hard to keep things working well.

Do you remember when you went to school, how your teacher taught you that sharing is important? It's the same principle. All workers deserve to be appreciated and respected for their hard work. Labour Day is a reminder to show gratitude for that hard work and so we usually give them a day off so they can relax and enjoy time with their family and friends.

And do you know what's cool? Labour Day is an international celebration, which means it's celebrated by people all around the world, usually on different days throughout the year. But the message is the same - we all appreciate the hard work and dedication of workers everywhere.
