ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lands inhabited by indigenous peoples

Indigenous peoples are people who were living in an area before other people came and started living there. So imagine a group of kids playing in a backyard, but then someone else comes and starts playing there too. The kids who were playing there first are like the indigenous people.

When people come and start living in an area that was originally inhabited by indigenous people, it can cause a lot of problems. This is because the new people might not understand or respect the land, animals, or ways of life that the indigenous people have always known.

For example, imagine the kids who were playing in the backyard always took care of the plants and animals there. But then the new kids come and start pulling up plants, scaring the animals, and making a lot of noise. This would make the original kids upset and worried, just like how indigenous peoples might feel upset or worried when others come and start changing things.

That’s why it’s really important to respect the land, culture, and ways of life of indigenous peoples. They have a special connection to the land and know how to take care of it, so it’s important to work with them and learn from them. Just like how the original kids in the backyard might be able to teach the new kids how to take care of the plants and animals and play together in a respectful way.
