Lapis Niger

Have you ever heard of Lapis Niger? It's an ancient site in Rome that was once used by the Romans for important ceremonies and rituals.

So imagine a big, big place surrounded by tall, tall buildings made of stone. The floors were made of big, flat stones too, but there's a very special area in the center where the ground is black. It's almost like they painted it with black paint, but it's not paint at all. It's made of really hard black stones that are all put together in a fancy pattern.

The Romans called this area "Lapis Niger," which means "black stone" in Latin. It was built a long, long time ago in a place where people used to worship different gods and goddesses. They would come to Lapis Niger to offer gifts and prayers to their gods.

The area was considered very important because it was said to be the burial site of the very first king of Rome, Romulus. People thought that by coming to Lapis Niger, they could connect with the gods and even with the spirit of Romulus himself.

Today, Lapis Niger is still there, but it's underground now. You can visit it if you go to Rome and see the markers and signs that tell the story of its history.
