ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Last clear chance

Last clear chance is a rule that a court might use to figure out who is responsible for something bad that happened. Let's say you and your friend are playing catch with a ball. You throw the ball, your friend tries to catch it, but misses and falls down the stairs. Your friend might say that you're responsible because you threw the ball. However, if the court decides that you had the "last clear chance" to prevent your friend from falling by catching the ball yourself, then the court might say you're responsible instead. Basically, it means that even if someone else made a mistake, if you had an opportunity to "fix" it and didn't, then you could be held responsible.
