ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Latch (hardware)

A latch is like a special door-lock that doesn't need a key. It's a little piece of metal or plastic that keeps a door, cabinet or other object closed. The latch has a small part that sticks out and slides into a hole on the frame of the object that the latch is attached to. When you close the door or cabinet, this little stick or tongue pops into the hole and keeps the door from opening.

To open the door or cabinet, you need to move the latch. Most latches have a handle or knob that you turn or push to move the latch. Sometimes, latches are part of a bigger lock, where you need to enter a code or insert a key to move the latch and open the door.

Latches are really useful for making sure things stay closed and safe. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can be found in many places, including your house, car, and even at the park.
