Latchkey kid

A latchkey kid is a child who comes home after school to an empty house because their parents are at work or busy. It's like when you come home from school and your mommy or daddy is not there because they went to work. A latchkey kid might have to make themselves a snack to eat, do their homework, and wait until their parents come home.
