ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Late effect

Okay, sweetie, so when you hurt yourself, like when you fall and scrap your knee, it hurts for a little while and then it gets better, right?

But sometimes when you get hurt really bad, like if you break your arm, it can still give you problems even after it gets better. Maybe your arm can't move as much as it used to or it hurts when you try to use it.

That's kind of like what a "late effect" is. When someone has a serious illness, like cancer, and they get better, sometimes they can still have problems because of the illness even after it's gone. Those problems are called "late effects."

So just like your arm might still give you problems after it's healed from a break, a person who had cancer might still have problems with their body even after their cancer goes away.
