ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Lateral click

Have you ever used a computer mouse or trackpad to move your cursor around the screen? Well, sometimes these mice or trackpads have a special button on the side that makes a clicking sound when you push it. This button is called a lateral click.

It's called "lateral" because it's on the side of the mouse, not on top or in the middle. When you click this button, it does something different than the regular buttons on the top of the mouse.

Usually, when you click the regular button on top of the mouse, it selects something or opens a link. But when you click the lateral click, it does something called "scrolling."

Scrolling is when you move your screen up and down or left and right without actually moving the cursor. It's kind of like looking through a window and pushing on the frame to move the view around. You can use the lateral click to move your screen in all directions without having to move your hand to the side of the mouse.

So, next time you hear a clicking sound on the side of your mouse, remember that it's the lateral click and it's very useful for scrolling around your computer screen!
