Lateral masking

When we hear sound, it might be harder to hear other sounds nearby at the same time. Lateral masking is when a loud sound makes it harder to hear a softer sound right next to it.

Think of it like a dark room. If it's really dark, it's hard to see something that is right next to you because the darkness makes it harder to see. But it will be easier to see something that is far away.

Lateral masking is similar. If something is really loud, it can be harder to hear something that is right next to it than something that is far away.
